Of course you may be thinking of making your first dance just that little bit more unique, giving your guests a great opportunity to take photos of yourself strutting your stuff and making your special day that little bit more memorable by choreographing your own special dance routine in conjunction with your Wedding DJ or dance instructor.
If you are contemplating putting together a dance routine for your first dance I would advise employing the services of a dance instructor to help compile your routine and to teach you to put together the most appropriate moves. Often such choreographed routines will require a musical background that is made up from extracts of well know songs - the possibilities are endless but I would advise sticking to extracts of well known songs that your 'audience' will instantly recognise. For example suitable tracks might include: - Michael Jackson - Thriller, Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby, MC Hammer - You Cant Touch This and similar songs. However by introducing some slower songs such as something from Dirty Dancing or Flashdance to can add variety to your routine.
Your dance instructor will provide you with all the help (and encouragement) you need but there is no reason why you cannot try to put this routine together yourself - it will take a bit of time and effort but...
Here are a few tips to help you on your way:-
-Select the style or styles of dance that you intend to use - it doesn't just have to be hip-hop or street dancing.
-Choose the extracts of songs you intend to use - some fast, some slow - if you can get your audience to clap along or sing as they are watching with your choice of song then so much the better
-Start dancing and note down the steps that work with each particular section of music
-Concentrate on getting the footwork right in the first instance and then add in arm movements and poses
-Practise, practise and then practise some more to hone your routine to perfection - show your routine to some discreet friends if the dance is to be kept a secret to get their opinion.
On the day no matter what song or routine you have chosen as your first dance, dont be nervous, you are surrounded by family, friends and people that love you - they will not be worried if you make a mistake - they will all be there to enjoy your special day with you.

Your wedding DJ will be able to provide you with many more suggestions. As well as choosing the actual song, you might also want to consider how long the song is, particularly if you and your partner might be a little self conscious about dancing alone in the middle of a room being stared at and photographed by a hundred or so guests. A shorter song may be more appropriate than a longer one in this case, alternatively you could ask your Wedding DJ to mix out of the song after a couple of minutes. Another great option is to get your Wedding DJ to invite your guests to join you on the dance floor part way through the song - there is safety in numbers!!
